Bars & Restaurants in Reykjavik

Reykjavík has an astounding variety of restaurants including both native Icelandic cuisine and ethnic styles from around the world.
As anyone who has tasted Icelandic cuisine will tell you, the food served in Icelandic homes and restaurants is excellent.

Iceland’s two main resources in terms of food are fish and lamb, which are always fresh. Icelandic lambs spend the summer in the wild, feeding on only the most natural herbs and grasses.

In terms of ethnic cuisine, you will have no trouble satisfying a craving for Danish, Italian or French cuisine. For Asian delicacies, there are quite a number of Indian, Thai and Chinese restaurants and it is usually possible to find sushi in one of the many seafood restaurants and speciality restaurants in the city centre. For many travellers the holiday in Iceland is a true gourmet trip!

Please note that in restaurants in Iceland you do not pay for fresh water, unless you order bottled water. Bread is also provided free of charge.

Bars and restaurants in Island

Iceland: Bars and restaurants.

We have listed some of our favourite restaurants an bars in Reykjavik below:

Reykjavik city

Iceland: Reykjavik city.

RESTAURANT REYKJAVIK (Vesturgata 2 – in the middle of the old town)

A restaurant offering a daily Icelandic Seafood Buffet. Cosy place with an Ice Bar and a Cognac bar/lounge.

VID TJORNINA (Templarasund 3 – very close to the city lake Tjornin)

A delicious fish restaurant with exquisite specialties and menus that change on a daily basis. The restaurant is on the first floor of an old house furnished with love in the old Icelandic style (maximum 30 persons in different rooms).

THRIR FRAKKAR (Baldursgata 14)

In a quiet neighbourhood in the old town, another great little fish restaurant, which is favoured by locals. Only for small groups (the restaurant seats 44)  Particular speciality: whale.

PERLAN (“the pearl”, v/Oskjuhlid)

On a hill close to the city’s airport, creative architects covered the 5 hot water tanks supplying the city with a glass cupola. Here you will find an international rotating restaurant of the highest class (unfortunately with some of the highest prices too). Those looking for something less pricey can eat in the cafeteria, where cake is also on offer in the afternoons – you can have the view for free. The atmosphere is a bit cold, but spectacular, and is especially suitable for very large groups of up to 500 persons.

LAEKJARBREKKA (Bankastraeti 2 – right in the centre)

The restaurant in a former bakery dating back to 1834 offers exceptional Icelandic cuisine in a cosy atmosphere. Different rooms for 10 to 30 persons each.

HUMARHUSID (Amtmannstigur)

A small, fine restaurant with fish specialties, housed in an old wooden hut, very bright and cosy. Three small rooms, for 10 to 30 persons each.

EINAR BEN (Adalstraeti)

This establishment opened in 1997 and was an immediate hit. A feast awaits you that echoes the opulent times of the poet and entrepreneur Einar Benediktsson who made his mark on the nation in the 19th century. Many Icelandic idioms and phrases are derived from his poems which are his greatest legacy. Modern cuisine in a refined yet natural atmosphere. There are three interconnected rooms, each for 10 – 25 persons, as well as a comfortable bar on the top floor for cocktails and after-dinner drinks.

SHALIMAR (Austurstraeti)

Shalimar prides itself on being the northernmost Indian restaurant in the world. We recommend the chicken tikka masala, known to be highly addictive!

B5 Bistro - Bar (Laugavegur)

B5 is a multifunctional establishment: café, bistro, bar, even a private club! B5 combines style, elegance and a magnificent atmosphere.

101 Bar and Restaurant (Hverfisgata)

The restaurant and bar is one of the trendiest places in town and serves delicious food, featuring a combination of modern Icelandic and international cuisine.
The lounge offers the opportunity to relax with a drink from a wide selection of cocktails, wine and spirits.

BAN THAI (Laugavegur)

The food is always to die for and the place offers a very pleasant dining atmosphere that puts you right in a comfortable Thai sorta mood! It`s really Reykjaviks fancy Thai restaurant.

HABIBI (Hafnarstraeti)

This small reastaurant offers a menu of delicious Arabic cuisine - from kebab to falafel! The staff is really friendly. Habibi really hits the spot after hours of partying!
