Real Icelandic Winter Safari

4x4 Self Drive Experience - 5 day tour

BACK

The Real Icelandic Winter Safari shows you this northern Winter Wonderland through the eyes of Icelanders. This special tour is guided by Icelanders who have passion for winter travel. The tour takes place in uninhabited areas of Iceland far away from civilization. We use modified 4x4 self-drive vehicles (Land Rover Defender 110, bigger tires 38“, Snorkel, VHF radio intercommunication, GPS, air compressor) which were especially designed for demanding terrain. With these vehicles participants make their way through the snow covered highlands all the way to Landmannalaugar but also visit other main attractions in Iceland, like National Park Thingvellir, the Geysir area and Gullfoss waterfall. The travellers are accompanied by a professional driver guide ensuring safety and giving them detailed information about the country, its nature and culture. We stay overnight in remote mountain huts and cook our own meals. To top the evening off, you bath in a unique hot natural pool just outside the hut. If we are lucky we will enjoy a beautiful northern light show above in the dark skies. An adventurous holiday and a very special winter offer!

Day 1: Arrival

Shuttle from Keflavik airport to your accommodation in Reykjavik

Day 2: Reykjavik – Thingvellir – Crossing highland tracks to Gullfoss and Geysir - Holaskogur

Our staff will pick you up in the morning from your hotel in Reykjavik and bring you to our headquarters. Before the tour starts we will hold a briefing on off-road techniques and driving skills in Iceland, the car equipment as well as discussing the program. We board the ISAKs driving out of town north towards the highland pass Kaldidalur with a stop at National Park Thingvellir. From there we head onto Kaldidalur and towards the glacier Langjökull. We cross a highland track just south of glacier Langjökull, passing snowy covered volcano’s and lavafields. We get down from this mountain area in the early afternoon and stop at the famous waterfall Gullfoss and hot spring Geysir. From here we continue our drive over to Þjórsárdalur Valley to reach our hut in the early evening. After rolling out our sleeping bags inside the hut, it is time to prepare a traditional highland dinner and sing along to some songs. Being so remote from artificial lights we have good chances of seeing Northern Lights in right conditions.

Day 3: Fjallabak North - Landmannalaugar

In the morning after breakfast we set out course to the Pearl of the Icelandic Highlands, Landmannalaugar. It is located in the surroundings of the volcano Mt. Hekla which last erupted in the year 2000. To reach this closed off place during winter is an adventurous task. Arriving there after fighting our way through the snow we can have a warm welcome bath in the natural geothermal pool in the close surroundings. The mountain hut is our shelter for tonight.

Day 4: Fjallabak Area - Back to Reykjavik

We leave Landmannalaugar and the highlands behind and make our way through the snow down to the south coast. Here we drive on the black sand beach with the Atlantic Ocean as our neighbour. We arrive in the late afternoon or early evening back to Reykjavík. Drop off at your accommodation in Reykjavík.
