Wonderful Snaefellsnes

BACK

The Snæfellsnes peninsula is situated to the west of Borgarfjörður in the west of Iceland. It has been named Iceland in Miniature, as many national sights can be found in the area, including the Snæfellsjökull volcano, regarded as one of the symbols of Iceland. At a height of 446m, it is the highest mountain on the peninsula and has a glacier at its peak. "jökull"  means "glacier" in the Icelandic language. On clear days the volcano can be seen from Reykjavik, about 120 km away. The mountain is also known as the setting of the novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth by the French author Jules Verne.

Good to know:

For the nature-lovers this is a must. Lush valleys and lava fields with soft moss, abundant bird life, diverse fl ora, craters and salmon rivers characterize this part of Iceland. This area has captured the imagination of people all over the world, ever since Jules Verne wrote “The Journey to the Centre of the Earth“. The famous Snæfellsjökull glacier (1446 metres) is where the “Journey“, in this story, begins and ends at Stromboli volcano in Italy. A short walk will be made from the huge stone structure called Bárður Snæfellsás, who was a shaman/Viking who sensed the energy of the glacier. We continue to the beautiful beach at Djúpalónssandur, where we take a short walk. On the way, we pass Gatklettur, an interestingly-shaped cliff. En route, an unforgettable stop at Bjarnarhöfn, where the old national delicacy, cured shark, is prepared for consumption.
