This circular itinerary takes in all the key sights on and around Iceland‘s famous Route 1. At the end of each day of stunning scenery, you‘ll stay overnight in comfortable hotel or farmhouse accommodation. This tour for individual travellers can bee booked thoughout the whole year. DAY 1: ARRIVAL

 Flight to Iceland and rental car pick-up. Overnight in Reykjavík. Check information about driving in Iceland!  

DAY 2: REYKJAVIK &THINGVELLIR, GULLFOSS & GEYSIR

A free morning to get to know the capital. In the afternoon you visit the attractions of south Iceland. You drive to the historically important Thingvellir National Park, which is the site of Iceland‘s original parliament. Enjoy views across the clear waters of lake Thingvallavatn. Visit the famous Gullfoss waterfall, the powerful geothermal area famous for its spouting geyser Strokkur and other hot springs.

DAY 3: THJORSARDALUR & VIK

At the foot of the Hekla volcano, it is worth taking a trip to the valley of river Thjorsa. On the route to Vik, the southernmost town in Iceland, you can stop to see the Seljalandsfoss and Skogarfoss waterfalls

DAY 4: SKAFTAFELL & HFÖN & EASTERN FJORDS

Right next to the Ring Road is the Skaftafell national park with the Svartifoss waterfall surrounded by basalt columns. Europe‘s biggest glacier, Vatnajokull, and the impressive glacier lagoon Jokulsarlon are, without doubt, the highlights of the day. From the fishing village Höfn you drive to the Eastern Fjords, which belong geologically to the oldest parts of Iceland.

DAY 5: EGILSSTADIR & MYVATN

A visit to Petra‘s “rock garden“ is not to be missed. From Egilsstadir you drive through the uninhabited and desert-like areas of the Modrudalsoraefi to visit the attractions in north-east of Iceland. Explore the area around Myvatn, an active volcanic zone with pseudo-craters, sulphuric springs and bizarre lava formations as well as lush green fertile plains. This area is also home to a large variety of birdlife.

DAY 6: AKUREYRI – SKAGAFJORD

Visit Godafoss, the impressive “waterfall of the Gods“ en route to Akureyri, the largest town in the north. Take a trip to the fishing village Husavik, where you can join a whale-watching excursion in a wooden boat. Overnight stay is in Skagafjord, an area well known for the breeding of Icelandic horses.

DAY 7: SKAGAFJORD – BORGAFJORD – REYKJAVÍK

Up north the attractions are in the Skagafjord-area wich is also the centre of the icleandic horse breading. Close to Saudakrokur lies the fascinating folk museum at Glaumbaer. Continue west to the Borgarfjord district with its lava waterfalls and hot-water springs. Return to Reykjavík, where the tour ends. Explore the greater Reykjavik area on a walk through the old town or by car to Perlan, the Nordic House or the harbour front. 

DAY 8: REYKJAVÍK – DEPARTURE

You may organize the day as you wish, depending on your return flight. Return your rental car to the airport in Keflavik. Check in for your flight and return to UK (flights not included, check flight information here).
