Self-Drive tour around Iceland in 13 days

Secrets of Iceland is a self-drive tour with specially selected accommodation. It should delight those who enjoy a comfortable, cosy place to stay and personal attention. Through our excellent links with privately run guesthouses and hotels, we can guarantee a stylish holiday in every respect.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL

Flight from selected airport to Iceland and rental car pick-up at Keflavik airport. Overnight in Reykjavík.


DAY 2: REYKJAVÍK - BORGARFJORD

Take a short Reykjavík city tour before travelling across the Hvalfjord to the Hraunfossar waterfalls and to the Reykholt Saga site, home of the Edda author Snorri Sturluson.


DAY 3: BORGARFJORD - SKAGAFJORD

The most prolific hot-water spring – Deildatungnhver – is on the way north. Over the Holtavorduheidi highland plateau you reach the Skagafjordur region in the north-west of Iceland. Here you can visit the Glaumbaer folk museum and take a trip back in time to the era of our ancestors.


DAY 4: SKAGAFJORD - AKUREYRI

Enjoy a beautiful drive along the coast an through small villages. Visit Akureyri, the colourful town of the north with its botanic garden.


DAY 5: MYVATN - ASBYRGI – DETTIFOSS

Passing the Godafoss, the “waterfall of the gods“, the Myvatn region welcomes you with its pseudo-craters, steaming fissures, lush green plains and a varied birdlife (two nights). Many attractions are to be explored in this area. Boat trips leave daily from Husavik to go whale-watching, offering a good chance to spot a variety of species. Drive around the Tjornes peninsula to the Asbyrgi canyon. From Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Iceland, the gravel road leads back to Lake Myvatn.


DAY 6: MYVATN  - EASTERN FJORDS

You cross the Modrudalur desert to Egilsstadir, the commercial centre of the east. The route leads you further into the Eastern Fjords, to Stodvarfjord, set amongst dramatic ice-sculpted mountains. Visit Petra‘s unique rock collection as well as the fishing village of Djupivogur.


DAY 7: EASTERN FJORDS - GLACIER LAGOON - SKAFTAFELL

You continue on to the peak of Almannaskard, with views (in good weather) of the giant glacier Vatnajokull. Passing the fishing village of Höfn, you reach the glacier lagoon Jokulsarlon, where it is worth taking an exhilarating boat trip among drifting icebergs.

DAY 8: SKAFTAFELL - SKOGAR

In Skaftafell National Park, you will find the beautiful Svartifoss waterfall surrounded by basalt columns. Through the sand desert Skeidarasandur and the lava field, Eldhraun you reach the village of Kirkjubaejarklaustur. Continue through lava and black sand to the Vik village in Myrdalur. Plenty of sea birds nest at Cape Dyrholaey, among them the puffins, providing a favourite photo opportunity.


DAY 9+10: SKOGAR - GULLFOSS - GEYSIR - THINGVELLIR

Today‘s destinations are the attractions of the south. Start with the two waterfalls Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss. Continue the drive to two more famous sights: the Gullfoss waterfall, which spans several levels, and the Geysir area where Strokkur “the butter churn“ is constantly active.


DAY 11+12:  REYKJAVÍK

From the ‘greenhouse town’ of Hveragerdi you drive through the geologically and historically interesting Thingvellir National Park. A hike through the “Allmen- gorge“ and the Althing, the parliamentary seat, will be a fitting end to your tour before returning to Reykjavík. Take your time to enjoy Iceland`s young and vital capital, take a stroll through the many shops, walk along the coastline, enjoy the panorama view from the church Hallgrimskirkja and have a coffee in one of the many small cafés!


DAY 13: DEPARTURE DAY

After breakfast (depending on flights) you can enjoy some time in Reykjavik, before you drop your car at the airport. Check in for your return flight.
