REYKJAVIK CITY TOUR & BORGARFJÖRDUR SAGA VALLEY

Horses in winter

In the morning at 09h00 you meet your guide and group and start with a sightseeing tour in the capital. After seeing the highlights of Reykjavik we head west. We stop in Borgarnes and learn about Iceland’s earliest days at the Settlement Center. Next we go to Borgarfjörður, or the Saga valley as it is often called due it its rich history and important historical events. We have the chance to climb the volcanic crate Grábrók, visit Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring and see the beautiful Hraunfossar, a series of waterfalls pouring from a wide and lush lava field. Barnafoss – the Children’s falls, is nearby with its own tragic tale. In the afternoon there will be a lecture about the Northern lights for you to better understand this magnificent natural phenomenon. We spend two nights in West Iceland in the village of Borgarnes. We step in to the hotel garden after dinner to search for the Northern Lights and enjoy a hot cup of chocolate or tea.

SNAEFELLSNES PENINSULA

Snaeffelsjoekull

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula, “the peninsula of the snowy mountain“, juts out from Iceland’s west coast, like a long arm with a clenched fist at its tip, and is in many ways a microcosm of the whole island. A rugged mountain chain runs its length. Visit the Grundarfjörður with its mpressive coastline and mountains, lakes and waterfalls behind the village. Here you will also find one of Iceland´s most photographed mountain, Kirkjufell. Visit Arnarstapi and Hellnar before experiencing the area from below, inside Vatnshellir cave. We take you 35 meters underground and about 200 meters into the lava tube under the glacier Snæfellsjökull! Returning to Borgarnes the guide gives you some tips of how to best photograph the Auroras as part of the Northern Lights Academy program. Once darkness falls, we go out in the hotel garden in search of the Northern Lights and for those who wish to soak in the hotel’s outdoor hot tubs.

GOLDEN CIRCLE, GEOTHERMAL TASTE & ICELANDIC HORSES

Geysir Strokkur ©Buehler Buechi

We start the day travelling along the Hvalfjordur fjord. The first stop is at an Icelandic wool outlet store where you can see what they do with all the sheep! We continue inland to Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and part of the Golden Circle route which we travel today. After Þingvellir head to Haukadalur where we see steam rising from the Geysir geothermal fields as we arrive. The big and original geyser is now dormant but Strokkur "the Churn" erupts at 5-10 minute intervals. We go for some treats where the chef of the Geysir restaurant invites us to try freshly baked hot spring bread with Icelandic butter, geothermally boiled eggs and herring. Next up is Gullfoss, the Golden Waterfall, only few minutes away, a double waterfall that tumbles 34 meters into the Hvítá river. We will learn about the Icelandic horse in the afternoon, its unique qualities and history and make a visit to a geothermal greenhouse, before reaching our accommodation in South Iceland. After dinner we step into the evening darkness and search for the elusive Northern Lights in the peace and stillness of rural Iceland.

NATURAL WONDERS OF SOUTH ICELAND & EYJAFJALLAJÖKULL VOLCANO

Eyjafjallajokull volcano

Today we explore the South coast. We will make our first stop at the Lava & Volcano Exhibition Center where you learn about geology and active volcanoes. A little further east we visit one of Iceland's finest folk museums, Skogar. This museum contains a great collection of farm and domestic artifacts from Iceland's past and several turf-built houses. Nearby is the Skógafoss waterfall which is 60 meters high and one of Iceland´s most impressive waterfalls. In the afternoon take a stroll on the black lava beach and along bird cliffs at Reynisfjara beach. We spend the next two nights near Kirkjubæjarklaustur in the Vatnajökull National Park region, an ideal dark location to search for Northern Lights search.

SKAFTAFELL NATIONAL PARK & VATNAJÖKULL GLACIER

Today is all about glaciers, ice and icebergs. We travel to the picturesque Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon filled with floating icebergs, the black sandy beach below called the "Diamond" beach where you see stranded icebergs .As we explore the amazing site we might see seals swimming in the arctic waters. In the afternoon we visit the tiny turf church at Hof and spend time at Europe’s largest national park at about 12,000 square kilometres, which has Iceland’s highest mountains and Europe’s largest glacier. In the evening enjoy a film presentation about Northern Lights as a part of the Northern Lights Academy program. This remote and quiet location gives a good chance of seeing the Northern Lights shimmering and dancing across the night sky.

SOUTH SHORE, REYKJAVIK & BLUE LAGOON

The Blue Lagoon

We head across the Eldhraun lava field from Kirkjubaejarklaustur on our way to the village of Vík where we make a photo stop. The black lava beach with high bird cliffs and pounding waves is awe-inspiring. Further west we reach the high but narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall further West which plunges over the mountain and there‘s a trail that goes behind the fall which is interesting – be prepared to get a little wet! In the evening we head to Reykjanes peninsula to soak in the famous Blue Lagoon surrounded by lavafields. lava fields. We reach Reykjavík around dinner time for one last night.
