Thingvellir – Snaefellsnes Peninsula

Geyser Strokkur

The day begins with a visit to Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of Iceland’s parliament, founded in 930 AD, the oldest in the world. Here, the dramatic landscape reveals the meeting point of two tectonic plates, where North America and Europe drift apart, leaving behind striking fissures, clear ponds, and rivers, including the impressive Almannagja rift. From this historic setting, the journey continues to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, stretching proudly into the Atlantic from Iceland’s West Coast. Dominating the skyline is Snaefellsjokull, a 1,446-meter glacier-topped stratovolcano, famed for its mystical presence. Traveling around the peninsula, you’ll encounter rugged lava fields, sweeping coastlines, and the diverse landscapes of Snaefellsnes National Park, from volcanic craters and glaciated peaks to fjords, sandy beaches, and soaring cliffs. We follow the adventure of Jules Verne’s classic science-fiction novel about “The Journey to the Center of the Earth”. Do not miss your chance to go on a trip to the interior of the earth under the glacier Snaefellsjokull! This lava cave tour takes you 35 meters underground and about 200 meters into the lava tube called Vatnshellir.

FERRY TO WEST FJORDS – DYNJANDI WATERFALL

Snaefelssjokull

Today begins with a ferry ride from Stykkisholmur to Brjanslaekur, crossing the scenic Breidafjördur Bay. The 2.5-hour journey passes by the island of Flatey, which is inhabited only in summer. On clear days, you can enjoy stunning views of countless small isles scattered across the bay, with the striking Snaefellsjokull glacier visible in the distance. Upon arrival in the remote Westfjords, we continue over mountain passes and along the shores of picturesque fjords, eventually reaching the impressive Arnarfjördur. Surrounded by towering peaks, this fjord is home to one of Iceland’s true natural gems, Dynjandi waterfall. Cascading down seven tiers, this breathtaking waterfall has been voted the most beautiful in the country by the people of Iceland.

Iceland's westernmost point

Following the coastline, we make a stop at the Folk and Transport Museum in Hnjotur before continuing through one of Iceland’s most remote and sparsely populated regions. Our journey takes us to the dramatic bird cliffs of Latrabjarg, the westernmost point of both Iceland and Europe, and home to the country’s richest birdlife. From mid-May to mid-August, puffins nest here in great numbers, alongside razorbills, guillemots, fulmars, cormorants, kittiwakes, and many more. The cliffs are renowned worldwide for their density of seabirds, and a walk to the top of Iceland’s highest bird cliff offers unforgettable views. Even those who are not avid birdwatchers will be captivated by the charming puffins and the sheer spectacle of millions of birds in flight. If weather and road conditions permit, we continue to Raudisandur, a stunning 10-kilometer beach of red and golden sand. Its colours shift with the light, tides, and weather, creating a landscape of ever-changing beauty. This tranquil haven is home to seals and countless seabirds, offering both peaceful solitude and fantastic photo opportunities of the vibrant hues stretching across the shoreline.

WESTFJORDS – NORTHWEST ICELAND

Today, we leave the Westfjords and travel east along the inland edge of Breidafjördur, crossing broad valleys and gentle mountain passes. As we make our way from the secluded fjords into the open landscapes of Northwest Iceland, the scenery shifts beautifully along the route. Our journey includes a stop at Erpsstadir, a welcoming family-run dairy farm renowned for its homemade ice cream and various other dairy products. Here, you can get a glimpse into local milk production and enjoy a taste of their uniquely flavored ice cream, made fresh on the farm with seasonal ingredients.

Heading North

Today’s journey takes us off the beaten track as we circle the Vatnsnes Peninsula. We pass through the small fishing village of Hvammstangi, known as the seal capital of Iceland, before following a gravel road around the peninsula to one of its highlights, Hvitserkur. This striking 15-meter-high sea stack of volcanic rock rises dramatically from the shore, home to fulmars and gulls. According to legend, Hvitserkur was once a troll caught by the rising sun and turned to stone while attempting to hurl rocks at a nearby monastery. We then continue to Kolugljufur canyon, where powerful waterfalls plunge into a rugged gorge. From the viewing platform, you can watch as the calm river suddenly transforms into a series of dramatic cascades, an awe-inspiring sight that leaves no one untouched. Further north, we stop at Vidimyri to visit one of Iceland’s few preserved turf churches. Built in 1834, it features turf walls and wooden gables, offering a glimpse into the country’s architectural heritage. Finally, we travel over a high mountain pass to reach Akureyri, often called the capital of North Iceland, where we will spend the next two nights.

SIGLUFJORDUR – WHALE WATCHING – SEA ANGLING

Start the day with breakfast in the peaceful surroundings of Akureyri’s botanical garden before heading out on a 2 - 3 hour whale watching tour in Eyjafjördur, Iceland’s longest fjord, located just below the Arctic Circle. As a bonus, you’ll also have the chance to try sea angling at the end of the tour, a fun way to round off the experience. In the afternoon, we travel through stunning fjord landscapes toward Siglufjordur, Iceland’s northernmost town and once the herring capital of the North Atlantic. Nestled on the dramatic Trollaskagi Peninsula, the route passes through charming fishing villages and even a remote, deserted valley rarely seen by most Icelanders. A highlight of the visit is the award-winning Herring Era Museum, Iceland’s largest maritime museum and the only one in the country to have received the European Museum Award. Here, history comes to life, and we won’t miss the chance to sample herring served with Brennivin, Iceland’s signature schnapps.

VOLCANIC LAVA WONDERS – GEOTHERMAL BATHING

Myvatn Nature Bath

Our day begins with a visit to Godafoss, the majestic “Waterfall of the Gods,” before continuing to Lake Myvatn, a region celebrated for its rich birdlife and extraordinary volcanic landscapes. Here, we explore striking sights such as the pseudo craters, the lava labyrinth of Dimmuborgir, the tephra cone Hverfjall, and the steaming geothermal area of Namaskard with its hot springs, fumaroles, and bubbling mud pools. From there, we venture to Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, located in the northern part of Vatnajokull National Park. The round-trip walk takes about 40 - 60 minutes. The journey continues eastward, through stark highland deserts framed by mountains, before reaching East Iceland. We end the day with a relaxing visit to Vok Baths, a geothermal floating pool in Lake Urridavatn, allowing guests to soak in soothing hot water while surrounded by the lake.

EAST FJORDS

East Fjords Borgarfjordur

Today is devoted to taking in the dramatic landscapes of the East Fjords, with their winding roads leading to tiny fishing villages nestled at the ends of deep fjords. Our first stop is Petra’s extraordinary rock collection. Known since childhood as both a naturalist and a passionate collector, Petra spent nearly 80 years gathering a remarkable assortment of rocks, crystals, zeolites, quartz, and more – all sourced from the surrounding East Fjords. In the afternoon, we continue south, where the vast Vatnajokull glacier comes into view, dominating the landscapes of Southeast Iceland.

Today’s adventure takes us to Vatnajokull National Park, which spans about 14 % of Iceland and is Europe’s second-largest national park by area. We begin with a boat ride among the floating icebergs of the stunning Jokulsalon glacial lagoon, one of the highlights of any Iceland tour. Next, we stroll along the black sands of the nearby Diamond Beach, where icebergs glisten like jewels against the dark shoreline. We then explore the Skaftafell region, nestled beneath Iceland’s highest peak and Europe’s second-largest stratovolcano, Hvannadalshnukur, standing at 2,110 meters. Here, we walk close to one of the many glacial tongues in the area - a perfect photo opportunity. Continuing through a sandy desert, we reach our final stop of the day: Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, famed for its dramatic basalt columns and striking sea stacks.

SOUTH COAST – GOLDEN CIRCLE

Seljalandsfoss

Today we journey along Iceland’s South Coast, where the sea, rugged mountains, glaciers, and waterfalls create breathtaking scenery. Our first stop is Skogafoss, one of the country’s most iconic waterfalls. The powerful cascade often creates misty rainbows, adding to the magic of this unforgettable spot. Next, we visit Seljalandsfoss, where a slick trail allows you to walk behind the waterfall itself. Be sure to bring a raincoat and sturdy boots, as you’re likely to get wet. We then explore the Lava & Volcano Exhibition Centre, focused on Iceland’s geology and active volcanoes, and watch a documentary showcasing volcanic eruptions in recent years. On our way back to the northernmost capital, we travel part of the Golden Circle. Our first stop is Fridheimar, a geothermal greenhouse where we see how Icelanders cultivate tomatoes year-round. Next door, we can meet the iconic Icelandic horse, take a selfie, and learn about its unique traits and history. Continuing the Golden Circle, we visit Gullfoss, the stunning “Golden Falls,” before exploring the active geothermal area of Geysir. Here, Strokkur, also known as “the churn,” erupts up to 25 meters (70 feet) every five to seven minutes, a spectacular display of Iceland’s raw geothermal power.
