Golden Circle: þingvellir - Gullfoss - Geyser

Strokkur erupting ©Buehler Buechi

Your Iceland adventure begins after breakfast. The first stop on our journey is Thingvellir National Park. The park is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site but also the place where the North American and European tectonic plates meet. Our journey continues to Gullfoss waterfall. Various paths will take you to different viewpoints with fantastic views of the "Golden Waterfall". We then drive to the geyser area, where the Strokkur geyser erupts every 5-7 minutes. Today's tour ends in Hveragerdi, where we spend the night after a sumptuous dinner.

þJÓRSÁRDALUR VALLEY – SKÓGAR – DYRHÓLAEY - VÍK

After enjoying a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we head to the stunning Thjorsardalur Valley. The valley is known for its diverse landscape of birch forests, sandy lava fields, rivers, waterfalls, and, weather permitting, views of the Hekla volcano in the distance. In Stong, we have the opportunity to visit a replica of a Viking longhouse that was buried during an eruption of Mt. Hekla. Our journey then takes us along the scenic south coast, with stops at the picturesque waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss, before reaching Dyrholaey, a rocky formation extending into the sea at the black beach Reynisfjara. Our day concludes with dinner in Vik, the southernmost town in Iceland.

*Please note that Dyraholaey is closed for the bird nesting season between mid-May and the end of June.

VATNAJÖKULL NATIONAL PARK – Jökulsárlón - HÖFN

Glacir Lagoon Joekullsarlon

Today's destination is the glaciers of Iceland. After breakfast at the hotel, we will head to the southern part of Vatnajokull National Park. The park is named after the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajokull, and covers around 14% of Iceland's total land mass. We will then drive eastwards through sandy landscapes until we reach the famous Skaftafell region. Here, we will hike through lush green nature and black sand, passing several glaciers. The Svinafellsjokull glacier tongue is particularly worth seeing.

We will visit the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon where, with a bit of luck, we may see seals swimming or sleeping on ice floes. A boat tour across the lagoon can be booked as an option (only bookable in advance). Right next to the lagoon is the famous Diamond Beach, which got its name from the icebergs and ice floes that have washed ashore. We will spend the night in Hofn. Dinner is on your own. Hofn offers a great selection of restaurants, and the local speciality is langoustines (Norway lobster).

HOFN – EAST FJORDS - EGILSSTADIR

Eastfjords

After breakfast, we departed from Hofn and travelled through the Almannaskard Pass. Our journey took us through the captivating landscape of the East Fjords. Steep mountains overlooked the fjord, while peaceful fishing villages adorned the roads, each with its distinct charm. We made a stop in the village of Breiddalsvik and visited the Beljandi microbrewery, where we got to taste their beer. Afterwards, we continued to Egilsstadir, where we planned to have dinner and spend the night. The town is situated near Iceland's largest forest and a lake where, according to legend, a friendly monster resides.

Lake Mývatn Area

Lake Myvatn

We have breakfast at the hotel and explore the barren highland plateau of Modrudalsoraefi before travelling to the diverse Myvatn area. On the way, we pass Studlagil Canyon, an impressive canyon of basalt columns. From the viewing platform, we have a fantastic view of the canyon and the blue-green river that flows through it. Our next stop is Dettifoss, one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe. The journey continues to the Namaskard Pass with its bright colours and bubbling mud pots. Visit the pseudo-crater Skutustadir and take a look inside the Grijotagja cave, an underground hot spring. According to legend, elves still live in the lava formations of Dimmuborgis. After the many impressions of the day, we have dinner and spend the night in the Myvatn area.

LAKE MYVATN AREA – Goðafoss - AKUREYRI

After a delicious breakfast, we have time to take in the fascinating sights of the Myvatn area. We will then make our way to Godafoss waterfall, where we will learn all about this fascinating natural beauty. Our next destination is the town of Akureyri, which is also known as the capital of Nordenisland.

You will have the afternoon at leisure in the town. Take part in an optional whale-watching tour or relax in the hot waters of the Forest Lagoon.

SKAGAFJÖRðUR - BORGARNES

Hraunfossar and Barnafoss ©Icelandic Explorer

After a hearty breakfast, we start our day with a drive through beautiful valleys towards Skagafjordur. The region in the north of the country is recognised by Iceland as one of the best regions for horse breeding. We will learn a lot about the unique breed of Icelandic horses and their fifth gait (tolt), which has remained unchanged since Viking times. After this interesting introduction, we will drive across the Holtavorduheidi plateau to West Iceland. We cross the Borgarfjordur region, which is internationally renowned for its beautiful volcanic landscape and Viking history. We visit the hot springs Deildartunguhver and the unique waterfall Hraunfossar, where bright blue water runs over the black lava cliffs. Barnafoss is also not far away and offers a fantastic photo opportunity with its even bluer water. Dinner and overnight stay are in the Borgarfjordur area.

BORGARFJORDUR – SNÆFELLSJOKULL NATIONAL PARK - REYKJAVIK

Kirkjufell ©Andreas Clematide

After breakfast, today's destination is Snaefellsjokull National Park, where we will visit many sights. We will see the Snaefellsjokull glacier, which hides a volcano under its ice cap, and Kirkjufell, one of the most photographed mountains in Iceland. We'll take a walk across the unique Djupalonssandur beach and have the opportunity to admire the majestic basalt stone formations in the idyllic fishing village of Arnarstapi. In the afternoon, we will visit the Bjarnarhofn Shark Museum, where we will learn all about the infamous ‘Hákarl’. If you dare, you can even try a piece of the fermented shark meat. We will then drive back to Reykjavik, where we will spend the last night of our trip.
