The best-known of all treks in Iceland, this trail leads from the famous valley of Landmannalaugar in the southern highlands, south to Thórsmörk valley north of the great Eyjafjallajökull glacier. On the way, we cross the third-biggest geothermal zone in the world, pass yellow rhyolite mountains, black deserts and green valleys. Accommodation is in comfortable mountain huts. Arrival - Reykjavik

Flight from selected airport to Keflavik/Iceland. Shuttle transfer to Reykjavik. Overnight in a Guesthouse.

Use the day to explore the city. Depending on arrival time, it is possible to make an optional excursion. Go swimming in the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon or go on a whale watching tour.   

Reykjavik - Landmannalaugar

Taking a bath

At 7 am we take the public bus from the BSI Bus Terminal and set off for Landmannalaugar. On the way we can admire the Icelandic landscape as we drive past the volcano Hekla and other volcanoes in the Dómadalur area. We reach Landmannalaugar at noon, where we have lunch before starting the hike. We hike south through the colourful mountains, past small gorges, steaming hot springs and yellow mountain ridges. We will spend the night in the Hrafnitunnusker mountain hut.

Landmannalaugar (1,969 ft) - Hrafntinnusker (3,610 ft) - Álftavatn (1,740 ft)

We start our hike with a descent into the gorges of Jokultungur. A fascinating sight of hundreds of bubbling mud and steaming hot springs awaits us here. We follow the hiking trails and have a breathtaking view of the Alftavatn area and the famous glaciers Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull. In the afternoon we reach the Alftavatn hut, where we will spend the night.

Hiking in the Highlands

Today we pass the green cone-shaped volcano Storasula on foot before entering the black desert of Maelifellssandur. On our hike, we entered the Emstrur region, where farmers used to graze their sheep in summer. We visit the fascinating Markarfjot Canyon, which cuts almost 660 ft. into the rocks south of the Hattfell volcano.

Glacier in Iceland

Today's hike takes us through the narrow valleys and gorges of Emstrur. Along the way, we always have the large Myrdalsjokull glacier in view. In the afternoon, we arrive at Thorsmork, also known as the woods of Thor, where we find a green valley dotted with Arctic birch trees and flowers. In the evening, we reach the mountain huts in Thorsmork, where we enjoy a barbecue together before going to bed.

Thorsmörk - Reykjavik

In the morning, we will hike along the various paths through Thorsmork. We have the option to visit the Songvellir Cave (Song Cave) or hike to the top of the small mountain Valahnukur, from which we can enjoy a fantastic view. In the afternoon, we will start our return journey to Reykjavik and expect to arrive at the BSI bus terminal around 7:30 pm.

Shuttle transfer from your guesthouse to Keflavik airport for your return flight.

Depending on your flight you can explore the City or book an optional excursion. 

Necessary Equipment:

  • Sleeping bag
  • Warm underwear (no cotton)
  • Walking socks and well-used hiking boots
  • Shoes for crossing the rivers (slippers, trainers…), and some to use during the stays in the hut
  • Fleece or similar jackets, tracksuit
  • Gore-Tex jacket and trousers
  • Gloves, cap, swimsuit, sunglasses
  • Thermos and lunch box
  • Towel
  • Sunscreen, flashlight
  • Backpack to carry your daily luggage during the walks
  • Walking sticks (give more safety when crossing rivers)
  • Plaster for blisters and medicine for personal use

Note:

Difficulty: Suitable for individuals who are physically active and have some experience traveling in mountainous terrain with a backpack. Expect 6-7 hours of walking per day.

All cabins are heated. Not all cabins have electricity or hot water. The cabins have bunk rooms with single and double beds, so participants must be prepared to share a room with other travellers in the group.
