Iceland's most famous trek - from hut to hut

The best-known of all treks in Iceland, this trail leads from the famous valley of Landmannalaugar in the southern highlands, south to Thórsmörk valley north of the great Eyjafjallajökull glacier. On the way, we cross one of the biggest geothermal zone in the world, pass yellow rhyolite mountains, black deserts and green valleys. Accommodation is in comfortable mountain huts. Escorted tour with luggage transportation. International groups of 6 - 16 people will be guided by an experienced Icelandic trekking guide. A perfect outdoor holiday trip to Iceland!

Arrival - Reykjavik

Flight from selected airport to Keflavik/Iceland. Shuttle transfer to Reykjavik. Overnight in a Guesthouse.

Use the day to explore the city. Depending on arrival time, it is possible to make an optional excursion. Go swimming in the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon or go on a whale watching tour.   

Reykjavik - Landmannalaugar

Taking a bath

At 7 am we take the public bus from the BSI Bus Terminal and set off for Landmannalaugar. On the way we can admire the Icelandic landscape as we drive past the volcano Hekla and other volcanoes in the Domadalur area. We reach Landmannalaugar at noon, where we have lunch before starting the hike. We hike south through the colourful mountains, past small gorges, steaming hot springs and yellow mountain ridges. We will spend the night in the Hrafntinnusker mountain hut.

Hrafntinnusker – Hvannigil

We start our hike with a descent into the gorges of Jökultungur. A fascinating sight of hundreds of bubbling mud and steaming hot springs awaits us here. We follow the hiking trails and have a breathtaking view of the Alftavatn area and the famous glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Myrdalsjökull. In the afternoon we reach at Hvanngil hut, where we will spend the night.

Hvanngil – Emstrur

Hiking in the Highlands

Today, we leave the green oasis of Hvanngil and hike into the black desert of Maelifellssandur. The Hattfell volcano lies ahead of us as we hike in the Emstrur region, where farmers used to graze their sheep in summer. We visit the majestic Markarfljot canyon before reaching our accommodation for the night, the Botnar hut.

Emstrur – Thorsmork

We hike further downhill through the narrow valleys of Emstrur. The Myrdalsjokull glacier is always in view, just a few kilometers away. In the afternoon, we reach the Thorsmork Valley, which is characterized by green meadows, colorful flowers, and birch forests. We spend the night in one of the huts, where we will have a barbecue together at the end of the day.

Thorsmörk

We start our last day with relaxed hikes along the many paths in the Thorsmork Valley. We can visit the Sönghellir cave and climb the small mountains of Valahnukur. In the afternoon, the bus takes us back to Reykjavik, where our tour ends around 19:20 at the BSI bus station.

Shuttle transfer from your guesthouse to Keflavik airport for your return flight.

Depending on your flight you can explore the City or book an optional excursion. 

Necessary Equipment:

  • Sleeping bag
  • Warm underwear (no cotton)
  • Walking socks and well-used hiking boots
  • Shoes for crossing the rivers (slippers, trainers…), and some to use during the stays in the hut
  • Fleece or similar jackets, tracksuit
  • Gore-Tex jacket and trousers
  • Gloves, cap, swimsuit, sunglasses
  • Thermos and lunch box
  • Towel
  • Sunscreen, flashlight
  • Backpack to carry your daily luggage during the walks
  • Walking sticks (give more safety when crossing rivers)
  • Plaster for blisters and medicine for personal use

Note II

Difficulty: Suitable for individuals who are physically active and have some experience traveling in mountainous terrain with a backpack. Expect 6-7 hours of walking per day.

All cabins are heated. Not all cabins have electricity or hot water. The cabins have bunk rooms with single and double beds, so participants must be prepared to share a room with other travellers in the group.
