REYKJAVÍK - Horse farm Vellir
Pick up in Reykajvik on the day of arrival around 17:30. Drive to the farm Vellir near Hveragerdi. Dinner together, getting to know each other and description of the tour.
On the longer tours, each rider has the chance to ride 10 - 15 different horses and thus improve their riding skills. With a free-roaming herd of horses, our guests experience travelling on horseback as in the old days - a unique opportunity for a close encounter with untouched nature and one of the last great wilderness areas in Europe. A very special experience is the ride along the ancient Sprengisandur highland route with its fascinating and extreme scenic contrasts. The overwhelming vastness of the highland deserts between the Hofsjokull and Vatnajokull glaciers surrounds us on our way north.

We take the bus to the Fellsmuli farm near the Hekla volcano. This is where the riding tour begins. We slowly make our way through a birch forest along the Thjorsa river towards the highlands on soft paths. On our route we pass the Thjorfafoss waterfall and the striking Burfell mountain. Overnight stay in a hut in Holaskogur. (approx. 16 miles, 5 hours)
The more we head towards the highlands, the more the landscape changes. We spend the night near Hrauneyjarfoss, where one of the largest hydroelectric power stations in Iceland is located. (approx. 22 miles, 7 hours)
Today's ride starts at the Hrauneyjarfoss waterfall and takes us to Versalir, a rest area located at the entrance to Sprengisandur. If visibility is good, you can see the Vatnajokull and Hofsjokull glaciers. Overnight stay in a mountain hut. (approx. 31-37 miles, 9 hours)
A long day lies ahead. Gradually we get closer to the glaciers. To the east of us rises Arnarfell, a green mountain, the centre of Iceland. We are now in the highland area of Sprengisandur. Overnight stay in a large mountain hut in the Nyi Dalur valley. (approx. 37 miles, 10 hours)
Today's ride offers fascinating views over the northern Icelandic landscape. We slowly leave Iceland's three largest glaciers behind us and spend the night in a mountain hut in Laugafell. There we also have the opportunity to relax with a hot bath. (approx. 28 miles, 8 hours)
The ride starts from Laugafell towards the fjord Eyjafjordur with an increasingly green landscape and a beautiful view of Akureyri, Iceland's second largest city. The destination is the farm Halldorsstadir. From there drive to Akureyri airport for the return flight to Reykjavik (arrival around 18h00). (approx. 22 miles, 6 hours)
