Sights and Attractions

South Iceland

Geyser Strokkur
The south is the most visited region of Iceland for tourists and this is hardly surprising, as this is the area of the geysers. Experience the most active geyser, Strokkur, which shoots hot water into the sky every 5-10 minutes, and be enchanted by the bubbling landscape. The geyser is located in the Haukadalur geothermal region, a valley of hot springs and glassy blue pools.

Thingvellir National Park
When you reach the area of the geysers, immediately follow up with a visit to Thingvellir National Park. The park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most historically important sights in Iceland, as the world's first democratic parliament was appointed here in 930 AD. Countless rock crevices bear witness to the drifting apart of the North American and Eurasian continental plates.

Gullfoss Waterfall
Not far from the Geyser area is one of Iceland's most beautiful waterfalls, Gullfoss. It pours down in two picturesque cascades between two rock crevices. If you travel a little further south, you can enjoy the impressive south coast of Iceland, which is also a popular destination with the black beach at Vik and Cape Dyrholaey.

Reynisfjara
The black sand beach on the south coast of the country is one of Iceland's best-known beaches and is also famous beyond the country's borders. According to Icelandic legend, the two stone peaks that rise out of the sea in front of the beach are called Reynisdrangar and were created by a battle between two trolls and a three-masted ship. When the sun rose, the trolls were petrified and the ship was trapped with them.

North Iceland

The Mývatn area
The area around Lake Myvatn offers a variety of interesting sights. At the southern shore of the lake are the Skutustadagigar pseudo-craters, which can be hiked and guarantee a breathtaking view over the landscape. On the eastern shore of the lake is the Myvatn Natural Bath, which with its turquoise colour is a great alternative to the Blue Lagoon. For the adventurous, several caves around the lake can be visited.

Godafoss
Between the towns of Akureyri and Myvatn lies the famous Godafoss waterfall, the "waterfall of the gods", whose massive falls pour imposingly onto the rocks. According to the legend, the law speaker Thorgeir threw the pagan images of the gods into the waters of the waterfall when Iceland converted to Christianity.

Húsavik
In Husavik, the colourful house facades and the small wooden church in the centre invite you to take a stroll. Husavik is also the ideal place for whale-watching tours, which have been spot on around 98% of the trips in recent years. This is because more than 20 different species of whales come to Skjaldfandu Bay to feed.

Hvítserkur
The 16,4-yard-high basalt rock rises prominently out of the water on the eastern side of Vatnsnes. The rock is an ideal place to observe various species of birds and seals. Supposedly, the rock is a troll that, while trying to destroy the monastery of Thingeyrar, was surprised by the sunrise and petrified.
