This self drive trip gives you the opportunity to discover the wonderful saga of Iceland, the Geysers and waterfalls and see the most beautiful surroundings on the south coast in just five days. This is ideal for half-term breaks. Discover Iceland in winter. Two nights in a nice countryhotel and a hotel in Reykjavik are included. You decide how to spend your day! Enjoy your evenings, relax in the hotel HotPot (Jacuzzi) and try to spot the wonderful northern lights (aurora borealis).
Arrival at Keflavik airport and rental car pick up. Drive past the Blue lagoon (optional choice to visit the Blue lagoon) then onward teh South Coast road. The road takes you through fantastic landscape and along the coast passing charming fising villages. Overnight in the south for the first 2 nights.
A long day at the south coast with waterfalls, black beaches and glacier Myrdalsjökull awaits you. You might drive further to Skaftafell National park and up to Glacier Vatnajökull, the biggest glacier in Europe, to explore the beautifull glacier lagoon Jökulsarlon. These unique surroundings have captured the attention of many film-makers. Major parts of both James Bond and Batman movies were shot here. Instead you might just want to explore the bird cliffs close to the small town Vik and maybe do a glacier hike on Myrdalsjökull Glacier.
From Hveragerdi you head to the mighty waterfall Gullfoss and the famous Hot Spring area of Geysir, probably the most remarkable tourist attractions in Iceland. You might want to stop at Skálholt. Skálholt was home to the head of the Icelandic Church from 1056 AD, which was located there for nearly 750 years.From there its worth driving to Kerið volcanic crater, which is thought to be around 3,000 years old. Drive up to Thingvellir, where the world’s oldest parliament was set up in around 930 AD. Thingvellir is on the World Heritage List, first published by UNESCO in 1972. From Þingvellir your journey takes you to the capital Reykjavik where you stay for the next two nights.
A day to get to know the capital. You might want to take an optional whale watching boat tour from Reykjavik or simply enjoy a stroll and shopping in the City. Visit the Harpa concert hall, Hallgrimskirkja church and enjoy panoramic views of the city from Perlan.
Drive to Keflavik airport. Drop of the rental car at Keflavik Airport. Flight back to the UK.
