Reykjavík Marathon & Culture Night – Experience Iceland’s biggest summer festival

Every August, Reykjavík is transformed into a vibrant festival city. When the Reykjavík Marathon and Culture Night (Menningarnott) take place on the same day, visitors experience a unique blend of sport, culture and Icelandic zest for life. Thousands of runners from all over the world join locals and travellers in celebrating the Icelandic capital’s birthday – an experience that will make your trip to Iceland unforgettable.

Reykjavík Marathon – Running through the world’s northernmost capital

The Reykjavík Marathon has been held every August since 1984 and is one of Iceland’s most popular running events. The varied routes take runners past the city’s most famous landmarks, along the coast and through lush parks. Whether it’s the marathon, half-marathon or shorter distances – both ambitious runners and recreational runners will find the right challenge here.

The atmosphere along the route is particularly charming: spectators cheer on the participants with music, a great atmosphere and typical Icelandic hospitality. As the marathon takes place at the same time as Culture Night, there is a lively, festive atmosphere throughout the city centre.

Culture Night (Menningarnott) – Reykjavík celebrates its birthday

Culture Night, known as ‘Menningarnott’ in Icelandic, is Reykjavík’s biggest city festival and commemorates the granting of city rights in 1786. Since its inception in 1996, it has developed into one of Iceland’s most important cultural events. The entire city centre is transformed into a stage for music, art, theatre, dance, street performers and numerous hands-on activities.

What makes it special is that most events are free of charge and invite visitors to experience Reykjavík from a whole new perspective. Museums, galleries and cultural venues open their doors, whilst concerts and performances bring the streets to life. The grand finale is traditionally a spectacular fireworks display over the city.
