On 12 August 2026, a total solar eclipse will take place in Iceland. During the eclipse, the Moon will pass completely in front of the Sun, obscuring it for a short time. During this period, even the solar corona – the Sun’s luminous outer atmosphere – will become visible.
The solar eclipse will be visible mainly in the west of Iceland. The path of totality runs through, amongst other places, the Westfjords, the Snaefellsnes Peninsula and the Reykjanes Peninsula. The total solar eclipse can also be observed in Reykjavík.
For a short time, it will become unusually dark in the middle of the day and the landscape will appear bathed in a very special light. A total solar eclipse is a rare event. The next total solar eclipse visible from Iceland will not take place until the year 2196.
